A Cheaper Indian Artificial Heart Based On Roaches Is Coming Soon

No more death caused by heart attack few years later or it is still a myth?

A group of indian scientists from New Delhi created an artificial heart based on roaches structure of heart. TAH (total artificial heart) was developed due to the 13 chambers of roaches' heart which could easily survive from the cardiac arrest compared to 4 chambers of human heart. The TAH has been successfully tested on frogs and to be scheduled for testing on the goat in May 09. Once the test on animal is completed in a year without a failure, the first Indian TAH could be implanted into a human patient in 3 years time. The TAH will be further modified to become more resilient with metal and plastic. The cost is estimated at 100,000 Indian rupees which is about 30 times cheaper than those available in the market now.

What a wonderful creation for medical contribution! Finally, we might have no reason to admit that roaches are very hardy even the smallest creature on earth has the strongest heart than we have.

Termite Caste: How Much Do You Know?

A brief explaination of termites. Very simple, a colony of this unique insect in a special caste system which contains King & Queen, Workers and soldier. Each of the caste plays a significant role in the colony.

King - To fertilize the Queen ( no other function)

Queen - To only lay eggs. But they tend for the first brood after the establishment of new colony before the worker and soldier could reach maturity stage.

Alates - Swarmer/winged alates to help in establishment of colony. They will eventually turn into king and queen after copulation.

Worker - To take care of the brood and also look for food source, build and repair the mud tubes.

Soldier - To defend against predators especially ants.

So, in short, never bully the termites. :p

Liquid Food Sharing Among Ants Is Called Trophallaxis

Trophallaxis is a unique process where worker ants share their liquid food among each other members in a same colony. The workflow is simple: Worker ants forage for food and store the liquid food in abdomen. Later, the worker ants will share the liquid food which is stored inside the crop of the abdomen to the members by mouth-to-mouth method just like kissing.

That's so amazing! A lot of social insects sharing liquid food by trophallaxis such as termites. However, termites and ants are different in terms of scientific classification, caste system and impacts of their damage to the environment and human.

So what happen to the solid food? Worker ants cannot store the solid stuff inside the abdomen. Thus, they will carry the solid food back to the nest and pass to the immature ants, larvae. Larvae will chew the food and regurgitate to worker ants to allow the trophallaxis to be proceeded.

Decapitating Flies Attacks Fire Ants

In South Amerika, there are at least 18 species of decapitating flies has been reported to attack fire ants! This discovery has led to further research by scientiest as to develop a natually biological control for fire ants.

The amazing process of the attack is ... Really amazing!! Don't lay eggs into my head..Please

1) Decapitating flies attack the fire ant worker and lay eggs into its head.

2) The larva will feed on internal issue of ant head.

3) The head of ant will be decapitated by the chemical released from the fly before it can emerge from the ant head. Thus, the head of ant will be broken up.

4) The adult fly will eventually emerge from the head of ant.

Termi-Mesh: Termite Barrier System

Termi-mesh? Made from marine grade stainless steel, with a small aperture that a termite cannot squeeze through. Termites also cannot chew through the material as well. The mesh has been proved of its high durability.

In short, this is a termite barrier system which is environmental friendly and as a prevention for the invasion of termites. However, this is not a solution to eliminate the existing termites infestation.

Largest Elephant Shrew In India!!

Do you know what is shrew?? Shrew is always mistakenly known as rodent but actually it is not a rat or even categorized under rodent group.

The largest insect-eating elephant shrews weighing 1.5 pounds has been found by scientist in remote forests in East Africa.

Common shrew we found at home is small and used to be called as house shrew. Cat never like to eat shrew due to its unpleasant smell and taste for cats!!! Do not worry, shrew does not possess "non-stop growing" incisors as rats, thus giving no harm to human and cause no damage.

Zombie Cockcroach!!

This is so astonishing!! Why cockroach becomes zombie and this zombie will evetually die without causing any harm to human????? This is not the commercial zombie that you used to watch inside a horror movie.

The biological control for cockroach is actually caused by the sting of parasitic wasp where the wasp will cause the cockroach to become halfly paralyzed after being stung by wasp. The victim will follow the wasp back to their nest and wait for the wasp to lay eggs on body of cockroach. The immature wasp will consume the body of cockroach and eventually it will die............

Six Pest Control Companies Fined For Anti-Competitive Behaviour

A group of 6 pest control companies in Singapore was fined a total of S$262,759.66 for for big-rigging and collusive tendering.

The Competition Commission of Singapore said Aardwolf Pestkare, Alliance Pest Management, Elite Pest Management, Killem Pest, PestBusters and Rentokil Initial, were infringed Section 34 of the Competition Act and were fined between $4,332 and $92,634 based on their annual turnover. The penalties was defined as a "deterrent but not unreasonable".

An incumbent company of a project for termites control involving the use of pesticide will inform the competitors via e-mails or SMSes to ask them submit bids at higher prices to ensure that the incumbent company will win the bid. The companies involved took turns to do this.

Giant Soldier Garden Termite Can Cause Bleeding!!

Giant soldier termite (Male is bigger than female)

Giant ultra-eusocial mound-building termite! This type of termite usually is called Garden Termite which has its scientific name as Macrotermes carbonarius. Commonly found in flat lowlands and at garden. Needless to worry as this species seldom attack building structures like the other subterranean termite because it is only feed on dead grass, twigs and surface debris. It is always a plantation pest rather than to damage your housing property.

Soldier termite

As you can see in the picture, the soldier has big and sharp mandibles which would cause you bleeding from its bite. Termite is actually a eusociality group forming a caste which included of worker, soldier, queen and king! Each of them carry out their own task for the whole colony.

Scorpion Bigger Than A Car!!!

Don't be shocked!! The biggest bug ever found from a 2.5-metre fossilized claw of an ancient sea scorpion was probably 8 feet long, as thick as a small car.

According to Discovery web site:

""We have known for some time that the fossil record yields monster millipedes, super-sized scorpions, colossal cockroaches, and jumbo dragonflies. But we never realized until now just how big some of these ancient creepy-crawlies were," he said."

This supports the theory that insects were much bigger in the Land Before Time. Those were the days for the insects, which had less competition from vertebrates, and ruled the earth with a disgusting claw.

Think Twice Before Chopping Down The Trees

Ever wonder why termites are causing tremedous damage to our properties - esp to BUILDING STRUCTURE?

Ever figure out what else they can consume after immense elimination of their natural feeding sources by human being?

They are actually inadvertently invading into building structure. Attack wooden based material as they could not distinguish between a house and a tree!!!

Marvellous Termites Mounds@Litchfield National Park

Have you ever wonder what kind of benefits termites could offer besides sustaining the earth?

Take a look at a huge mound built by them which has attracted people around the world to join the group. Boosting eco-tourism!!! What a great prospect.

Beware, termites create a lot of damages too.

Survive Up to 1 Month Without Head??

Cockroach can live for up to a month, without its head.

WHY??

(1) Cockroaches breath through spiracles for transferring oxygen to tissues but not controlled by brain as human does.
(2) Cockroach does not have blood pressure so cutting off the head does not lead to uncontrolled bleeding.
(3) They need much less food per day meal to last for whole month for not overactive.

However, they could die if only infected with mold, bacterium or virus.

Witness The Rat Wearing PPE

Hey!! Check this out again!! Even rats put on their PPE for survival. What is PPE? Personal Protection Equipment, in this case, the rat has selected to wear safety helmet. :P

So? Shall we still applying trapping for rodents control?

Think it twice. Look for their entry point and eliminate shelter, food, water for them.

Please share with us for any fun facts or misconception regarding rodents. Always welcome.
